I was inspired to paint on window screens after a trip to Mamou, Louisiana for the Mardi Gras celebration. I noticed that some of the riders wore masks made from window screen and learned that many of the original Mardi Gras masks from that part of the country were made that way. I use copper screen and latex paint. The paint must be layered many times in order to fill in all the holes. The image is painted on both sides so that the screens may be hung in open spaces or windows and viewed from both sides, much like stained glass images. For framing, I use old windows, shutters, transom frames, or make frames using old wood. It's a time-consuming process, but the finished pieces look really great and can be hung outdoors or in. I don't know of any other artist who is doing this type of work. |
